Well, I'm no tyre expert either, but it strikes me that the tyre sidewall is pretty important in channelling these gases to where they need to be in the EBD. If the sidewall is moving about more than it did this year, then they will need to ensure there is enough clearance between it and the floor and this clearance will also vary more dynamically. I suspect this will cause performance from the EBD to be less predictable.

Now, maybe you're right that the top teams will get more benefit from the system becoming more complicated to understand, but my argument is that this is likely to cause a reduction is performance generally from the EBDs, reducing their relative importance.

The new tires, if they deflect more might affect the upwash of the car under heavy cornering. It could affect the balance of the car but I doubt the effects will be large.

The 2013 tyres were used in FP1 today. Many drivers complained of over heating. Seems they get hot very quickly.

How interesting. Paul Hembery said specifically that one of their key objectives was better handling of compound traction on the rear (lat + long together) because that was a key weakness previously.

He also went on to say that they did provide that extra midcorner traction they sought.

Perhaps the new tires have the same behavior under longitudinal loads, but somehow the way they deflect under lateral load forces the compound to heat more than the previous tires "unlocking" more grip so to speak. It means these tires will require a bit more finesse to keep them going but when needed can really give you some performance. It might mean that drivers will have to find a new compromise of aggressively managing their tires.

Pirelli is keen to stay in formula one well beyond next season, according to motor sport director Paul Hembery.

He has already made clear that, depending on the sport's desire to keep racing with the Italian-made tyres, Pirelli wants to extend its tenure as the official F1 supplier beyond its expiring 2013 contract.

"Maximising the investments in terms of profitability will require a medium-term commitment," Hembery is quoted by journalist Peter Hesseler in the German-language Speed Week.

He answered "eight to ten years" when asked what his definition of medium-term is.
So we can see tyre compounds changing every year for 10 years! That'll please the teams no end.

There is an increase in minimum weight to compensate for an increase in tyre weight for 2013.

They are really terrified of change! Why on earth allow extra weight due to heavier tires when all teams run ballast?! Let them figure out how to run with less ballast, no?

Standard weight distribution sucks, though.

F1 is so weird these days.

Given the softer compounds for next year why would teams bother using anything but the harder of the two compounds as the main race tyre? I think this will reduce strategy decisions, all the top teams will qualify on the softer rubber, do a 7 lap sprint, switch tires and do two more stops.

The 2012 tyres were softer than 2011 too - but Pirelli said that a lot of teams were treating their tyres so good so as to get even more life out of the current tyres than they did out of the harder 2011 pieces.

Well not all the tires were softer, just the medium and hard but ofc the soft and ss got the same changes that all of them got that wasnt for making them softer.
