People following F1 for a long time know that such a gap won't disappear in one year.

Yes, quite a big hand, and they just used it to slap EVERYBODY in the face :P.

It's the benchmark now to beat anyhow. Let's see what the others can do.
2.5 seconds faster than last years pole. That rate of development is crazy.

This is why f1 is so good to develop technologies, the competition is so intense.

I think it's also because of new pirelli tyres, not only cars improvements.

So, 1:22.7 for the Merc on Softs. That implies a 1:21.7-1:22 is possible on super softs. Which means that the 2015 cars are close to the lap record around even the highest downforce circuits. Of course, Testing has better conditions than the actual race, but still, we're pretty close to the fastest F1 cars have ever been.

Which is amazing, and hopefully vindication for these types of engines =D>

I accept that there are other issues at play here too.

Imagine if exhaust blow diffusers were still allowed, with double diffusers

I don't really think the super soft is that much faster than the soft. I think the SS tyres would be destroy at the start of the last sector..

Agree.
In 2013 we had people compromising sector 1 in order not to overheat the tyres in the last sector.

Of course these are winter conditions, and since 2013 the tyres became harder and changed from the steel belt back to the kevlar belt, which doesn't heat up as much. I think they can fully push the car on SS's for a full lap without issues. Maybe not when they arrive at the race in spring, however.

and the fact that last year's pole was on medium tyres
