Road to the title

It has been a long F1 season and it's not over yet. WIth still 2 stages to go, Fernando Alonso is already certain of his Championship title. We follow the long road to the title of the youngest world champion in F1 history.

Australia: The lottery of qualifying in the rain produced an unusual-looking grid. Alonso started 13th, Raikkonen 10th. However, the Spaniard got onto the podium – next to his race-winning team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella – while the Finn scored just one point. Score: 6-1.

Malaysia: Maximum score for Alonso: pole and win. Raikkonen faltered and finished ninth. 16-1.

Bahrain: Another Alonso festival: pole and the win. Raikkonen’s first podium, but the gap increased. 26-7.

San Marino: The McLaren was astonishingly fast, then broke while leading. Fernando took a stylish win resisting Michael Schumacher. Score: 36-7.

Spain: Raikkonen confirmed his speed from the previous race, with pole and the win. Fernando limited the damage with a second-place finish. Score: 44-17.

Monaco: Renault made set-up errors and Alonso missed out on a podium finish, while Raikkonen once again took pole and the win. Score: 49-27.

Europe: Raikkonen led the race until the final lap… then retired. Alonso took the win. Score: 59-27.

Canada: Alonso hits the wall while leading, and is out of the race. Raikkonen wins the race. Score: 59-37.

USA: Michelin’s technical problems mean none of its teams race. The scores don’t change: 59-37.

France: Raikkonen’s engine change in practice leaves him with a 10 place penalty on the grid. Alonso took the win, with the Finn second. Score: 69-45.

Great Britain: Raikkonen once again changed his engine in practice and lost 10 grid positions once more. He finished 3rd, with Alonso 2nd. Score: 77-51.

Germany: Raikkonen led the race but retired. Alonso won. Score: 87-51.

Hungary: A Raikkonen win with Alonso out of the points. Score: 87-61.

Turkey: Pole and a win for Raikkonen, but Alonso only lost 2 points with a second place finish. Score: 95-71.

Italy: Raikkonen once again is forced to change his engine and loses 10 grid positions. He finishes fourth, while Alonso climbs onto the podium. Score: 103-76.

Belgium: Pole and win for Kimi, 2nd for Fernando. Score: 111-86.

Brazil: Pole position for Fernando, who finishes third, while Raikkonen takes P2. The score is at 117-94. With a 23 point lead and just two races left to run, Fernando cannot be caught. He is world champion!
