Webber about his weekend
Mark Webber's race was over after only a few hundred metres when he was hit by his spinning team mate Antonio Pizzonia. The Brazilian had been nudged from behind by the Red Bull of David Coulthard in the run up to the first turn. The Australians car was 25 laps in the pits undergoing repairs before he rejoined the action and did another 44 laps to finish 17th.
Mark Webber "Well this was certainly not the result we wanted. I got away ok in the run down to the first corner but David tried to squeeze between us and it was very tight. I didn’t see him until the last moment to be honest but when he tried to pull out of his position he clipped Antonio and spun him into me. I could see the bodywork was damaged but I didn’t know how heavily so I went back to the garage and the guys set about repairing it. They did a great job under a lot of pressure and the only reasons for getting back in the race was to improve my start position for my qualifying run in Suzuka and to learn about our race pace after a poor qualifying. It’s a shame really that we didn’t get a clear race because I feel sure there was a point to be had today. We could have run with Ralf Schumacher and Christian Klien and been in there battling for eighth. It’s been a tough week and we’ve got nothing to show for it."
Mark also didn't forget to congratulate Fernando Alonso with his world title. Although it didn't really come as a surprise he is certainly a worthy champion after the Schumacher years.
"Congratulations, though, to Fernando for winning the world championship. I’m really happy for him. He’s a great guy and a great racer who will be a good champion and great for the whole sport. He deserves everything he has achieved and Renault do as well. Look at where they were a few years ago and where they are now. Flavio said five years ago they would be battling for the world championship and they’ve been as good as their word."
