There are 75 points still available in July - Alonso
To be honest, Fernando Alonso was more of a spectator than a participant at this afternoon’s FIA Press Conference at the Silverstone circuit, because the media were more interested in trying to see if they could spark an argument between the two home drivers and team-mates, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton…they failed.
On to more serious matters and the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver gave his opinion of the new layout at this track. “I did a few laps on a bicycle today,” he said. “I think overtaking will be difficult, but no more so than in the past. One thing remains the same, in that all of us drivers like racing here as we love high-speed circuits.”
While in performance terms, the F10 had definitely made progress in Montreal and Valencia, the Spaniard feels this weekend could be very challenging. “It will be more difficult to be very competitive here, because the track characteristics are very different to those of the last two circuits. All the same, I am quite optimistic for this weekend and in any case, we have had plenty of bad luck in the first half of the season, so now I think it is time for us to have a lucky weekend. In theory, Red Bull should be the favourites here, but maybe we can change that idea after tomorrow’s free practice, when we will do more laps than usual for a Friday, to understand the changes to the track and to find the right set-up for the car.”
The British Grand Prix marks the halfway point of the season and Fernando summed up the challenge facing Ferrari in very clear terms. “We need to score 30 points more than anyone else in the second half and I think we have the potential to do that, given the fact that in the first half we had a lot of problems. This race and the next two will be very important, because we have three races in four weeks, which means there are 75 points available to take in July.”
Of course, in view of Spain’s win over Germany in yesterday’s World Cup semi-final, Fernando was asked for his thoughts on Sunday’s game. “We have a good opportunity to win on Sunday, so we will do our job in the motor sport arena and then enjoy watching the game on TV in the evening.”
