An old head on 21-year-old shoulders
BMW Sauber F1 Team driver Robert Kubica is one of the youngest drivers in Formula One. In his first year in the pinnacle of motorsport, he supports Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve regarding tyre choice and set-up of the BMW Sauber F1.06 during the Friday session of the GP weekends.
Robert has been the Friday test driver for the past three Grands Prix and the BMW Sauber F1 Team is already more than impressed with the performance of the young Polish driver. Following the motto 'Success comes from hard work', Robert is, nevertheless, eager to learn with every kilometre he completes. "As a young 16-year-old driver you tend to go over the limit once and a while. In the past, I used to try things that weren't particularly clever," says Kubica.
In the meantime, Robert has, however, been able to gather a lot of experience. He managed to impress with good performances in the World Series by Renault during the 2005 season and was rewarded with the title. "In the past two years, I have considerably improved my driving style. I'm more consistent now and I make as few mistakes as possible," adds the youngster.
During the free practice sessions of the 2006 Formula One season Robert has been able to confirm this increase in performance. In his first ever appearance for the BMW Sauber F1 Team in Bahrain, he was immediatly able to clock the best lap time of th session. As a BMW Sauber F1 Team test driver it is important for Robert to perform well. He says: "I think the past year, as well as my F1 performances so far have proved that I really have significantly improved."
