Cockpit safety in F1 to improve in 2008

Today, autosport.com revealed that the cockpit safety in Formula One will improve in 2008. David Coulthard and Alexander Wurz started a campaign for better cockpit protection after their crash at Australia. Coulthard flew over the top of Wurz's cockpit during the race at Melbourne and just missed the Austrian's head.

After a discussion between the Technical Working Group and the FIA, the plans to improve cockpit safety go in the direction of further raising the cockpit sides for the drivers. The exact specifications of the new cockpit sides have not been revealed yet.

The GPDA seems happy with the outcome of the discussion. Mark Webber, the director of the GPDA, said to 'autosport': "It will be great for us. If you look at someone like Tonio Liuzzi, he is not getting the support that he needs, and I am borderline as well. There are a few guys that don't get the protection.

"Both the guys involved in that nasty accident in Australia, Alex and David, were the two guys pushing it very hard. David obviously felt something had to be done after sliding across the car, and Alex felt the same after having an F1 car pass his visor."
